The Westkapelle sea dyke on Walcheren was the first to receive a new type of dyke reinforcement : breakwaters with piles on both sides.
In 1540 Emperor Charles V came to see the spectacular works especially.
A stone breakwater with piles is called a pile head . The posts, made of European oak, are 3.5 to 4.5 meters long and have a diameter of 20 cm.
Zeeland has about two hundred pile heads. Forty of these are located on the 12 km long Zeeuws-Vlaanderen coast. They are cultural heritage.
