Description

Zeeland was the center of "Zelle", which is peat soaked in salt. The traditional way to extract salt form the peat was to dry it and than burn it. The ashes are washed in water to extract the salt. If it is not done well, the salt was black. This type of salt was highly values for pickling herring. Zelle was highly taxed. There were big fines for anybody who was caught digging up peat illegally in this area.
