The first tram in Hengstdijk ran on 28 July 1916. Immediately they drove with goods and passengers. On 24 December 1901 a concession was requested for a tram line from Kloosterzande via Hengstdijk, Stoppeldijk, Zaamslag, Axel, Zuiddorpe to Zelzate. A bottleneck in the application was sugar factories in Sas van Gent. Many interested parties wanted to take the beets to Sas. The canal with a bridge to be built was an obstacle here. Because the subsidies and interest-free advances had to come from somewhere, a plan was finally laid down in 1909 in which all interested parties could unite. It became a line to Sas van Gent with a branch to Zelzate. In January 1907 the ZVTM (Zeeuwsch- Vlaamsche Tramweg- Maatschappij) was founded. The plans in which Hengstdijk appeared were from now on treated in a larger context. We then read "The population lives for the predominant part of agriculture and animal husbandry. One of the main advantages which can be expected from the construction of the new lines is the possibility of easier transport of beetroots to the sugar factories at Sas van Gent, Moerbeke and Zelzate, with which the railway will be connected.' From 1 February 1934 passenger traffic was discontinued, in September 1949 freight traffic was also stopped and the line was broken up. The first tram in Hengstdijk ran on 28 July 1916.
