Here you can see the double gate. It was built in 1619/1620 during the construction of the ramparts around Hulst. It was then a single gate. Later in 1932, after the road traffic/tram traffic had increased enormously and dangerous situations arose each time, it was expanded to a double gate. (Also an extra gate for pedestrians). The year 1771 is also inscribed on the gate. This is the year of the restoration of the double gate (then still single gate). Until the year 1845, the city was protected by closing the heavy city gates in the evening. The tram that departed from the train station Hulst to Walsoorden-haven where there was a connection to the ferry service to Hansweert. The tram passed through the east gate. From 1902 to 1949 the tram was used, originally for both goods and passenger transport. Passenger transport was discontinued in 1934. The total length of the tram line was 13 km. Width of the track 1000mm.
