Das heutige Gebäude wurde an der Stelle der ehemaligen kleinen Kirche Santa Maria Forisportae errichtet, die so genannt wurde, weil sie außerhalb des ersten Mauerrings und direkt außerhalb der Porta Vecchia errichtet wurde.
Die Kirche wurde Unserer Lieben Frau von Mariä Himmelfahrt geweiht. 1382 hatte ein Maler ein Fresko der Madonna der Demut gemalt, dh nicht auf einem Thron sitzend, gemäß einer Ikonographie, die zwischen dem 14. und 15. Jahrhundert in Italien besonders beliebt war.Read more
