Stadsbouwmeester Danièl Stalpaert ontwierp in 1660/62 bij de nieuwe stadsuitleg vier pleinen voor openbare kerken. De kerk die hier gebouwd werd zou een tijdelijke "houten predikschuur" worden, waarbij men zich voornam om "het plein of veld aan die Kerk egter groot genoeg te laaten, om op het zelve, t'eenigen tyde, eene steenen Kerk te konnen zetten". Als enige overgebleven houten noodkerk staat het eenvoudige kerkgebouw uit 1668/70 er nog steeds. De stenen kerk die ervoor in de plaats moest komen, is nooit meer gebouwd.
