Loenen originated from two hamlets, which were formerly known under the names Lona (previously Luona) and Sulvenda (previously Sulvalda), the current district of Zilven). These places are mentioned in a deed of donation from 838, in which Count Rodgar donates the usufruct of both to the church of Sint Maarten in Utrecht.
On the Dalenk in Loenen, an archaeological excavation in 2013 was carried out to find traces of farmyards with sheds and waste pits from the Early Middle Ages. Iron slag found there indicated iron production and the presence of iron furnaces. In 2017, finds from different periods were found at the Hameinde, the oldest of which dates back to 5000 BC, but also traces of hut bowls, which may be related to the medieval iron industry.
In the northeast of Loenen lies the castle Ter Horst, which was built in 1557 on the remains of a medieval predecessor for the mayor of Arnhem, Wijnand van Hackfort. From his family coat of arms, Loenen derives the French lilies in his own coat of arms.
At the end of the French period, on January 1, 1812, Loenen, as well as neighboring Beekbergen, was established as an independent municipality, but on January 1, 1818, both were added to the municipality of Apeldoorn.
The hamlet of Veldhuizen is also connected to Loenen. From 2 July 1887 to 1 August 1950, Loenen had Loenen Station, a railway station on the Dieren - Apeldoorn railway line. Nowadays there is a stop of the Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij. Right next to this is the former military mobilization complex (MOB) Veldhuizen.
