Dodewaard is first mentioned at the end of the 11th century as the Dodeuuero. In 1171 as Dudenwert, in the thirty years that followed, various variants of these two names appeared, such as in 1181 the Dondenuuerhe, in 1190 Dudenwert and in 1200 the Dudenwerthe. 'Dode' in Dodewaard refers to an old Germanic personal name that was written as Dodo, Dode and Dudan. The suffix worth could be corrupted from the name waritha, which is the name for an area partly or completely enclosed by rivers, or from the name werth (Dts) meaning land or island on the water. Dodewaard is located in the Nederbetuwe between the Waalbandijk and the A15 from Tiel to Arnhem and Nijmegen. Nationally, it is known for the nuclear power plant that was decommissioned in 1997.
