On September 10, 1944, the Belgian resistance group Het Geheime Leger sector Maaseik, which was meeting in their hiding place in the woods near Rotem (B) in preparation for the imminent liberation, was attacked by the German occupying forces.
26 members of the resistance group (men and women) were taken to Maastricht by the retreating Germans and their accomplices.
On 12 September 1944, 11 Belgian resistance fighters and one unknown person were executed by the retreating Germans and their accomplices at a location near the Belgian Monument Heer.
In the meantime, the American liberators were very close, a few hours later this region was liberated by them. The Belgian Heer Monument was unveiled on 12 September 1948.
The annual commemoration of the fusillade takes place on every 2nd Sunday in September. From 10.30 a.m., a ceremony will take place at the monument in the presence of, among others, Belgian relatives.
This ceremony is attended by about 300 people every year. The monument is currently located on the territory of the municipality of Eijsden-Margraten.
Until 1 July 1970, Heer was an independent neighboring municipality of Maastricht and the execution site, the monument and surroundings were Heer's territory.
Opposite the monument is an information panel and underneath it is a QR code, which takes you directly to the website of the Belgian Monument Heer.
