Darthuizen is located west of Leersum on the transition from the Utrechtse Heuvelrug to the lower Kromme Rijn area. From the 12th century until 1812 it was an independent municipality. In that year it was transferred to the municipality of Leersum. Between 1818 and 1857 it was again an independent municipality, after which Leersum definitively incorporated it. Common arable land (believes) and large flocks of sheep on the higher moors have always been characteristic elements for Darthuizen. The plots (camps) surrounded by hedgerows are whimsical in shape and lie like islands against each other. The prosperous municipality or hamlet used to have its own mill and it was located near Oud-Broekhuizen Castle. In the 18th century the castle fell into disrepair. An image from 1731 shows a residential tower. Forty years later, only a square tower remained. The remainder of it served as a sheepfold for many years and was demolished in 1905.
Comparison of the two images, from 1870 and this century respectively, still show many recognizable similarities in the landscape.
