Anti-tank wall

Here you can see a piece of Antitank wall. This is one of the defensive works in Castricum from the Second World War. Castricum was a heavily defended place in World War II. There were hundreds of bunkers in the dunes. The wall that you see here was part of the Atlantic Wall. The Atlantikwall was a more than 5000 kilometer long line of defense, which had to prevent a gallied invasion. The profile of the wall (the 'overhanging' front) shows that the Allied attacks from the landside were expected. The wall is partly along the public road and is largely hidden from view by vegetation. 267 homes and 79 business premises were demolished for the construction of the defense works. The neighborhood on the Zanderij disappeared completely. Most of the residents had to leave Castricum, except people deemed necessary such as farmers and horticulturists.

You can still find parts of the wall at the following places: a part north of the Geversweg, behind the Oud-Castricum building in line with the Oude Schulpweg; a part south of the Geversweg east of the Oude Schulpweg; a part to the west of the cemetery; three parts on the west side of Onderlangs at the De Puikman sports complex; a part at the foot of the Papenberg along the Beverwijkerstraatweg,
