The dune strip parallel to the beach consists of so-called young dunes. They are 'young' because they have only been formed since the Middle Ages. Young dunes are still developing, especially on the sea side, where the wind has the most influence and constantly supplies fresh sand. Young dunes can therefore grow up high.
The boundary of the young dunes on the land side is formed in many places by a steep inner dune edge with high dune peaks.
The boundary on the sea side is formed by the sea elm, the row of dunes right along the beach that functions as a sea-resistant dune.
