In 1886 the construction of the new St. Bavo Church began, which was consecrated in 1888.
The Sint-Bavo was designed by architect Carl Weber and is considered a highlight in his oeuvre. It is a cruciform basilica in neo-Romano-Gothic style. Characteristic is the high dome that looks somewhat disproportionate. This is due to the fact that the two west towers, which were originally planned, were never completed due to lack of funds.
