Until around 1950, the village of Asselt (north of Roermond) was located on an outer bend of the Maas. On the spot, the Meuse was 'straightened' and the bend of the Meuse was cut off. Around the cut-off Maasarm, as in many other areas of Central Limburg, a lake area has been created by sand and gravel extraction.
In 2005 the last finishing took place in the area. Larger riparian strips have been created, with bays and lagoons where natural riparian vegetation can develop on a somewhat larger scale. During sand and gravel extraction, a large island has been spared and some new islands have also been erected. The area is characterized by extensive lakes, small islands, reed edges and rough vegetation along the banks. It is a beautiful wetland nature reserve of up to 200 ha
