Small Water Gate

Description

The Kleine Waterpoort or De Ruyterpoort is the smaller of the two water gates in Delfzijl. The gate owes its name "De Ruyterpoort" to Michiel de Ruyter, who landed the West Indies fleet in Delfzijl in 1665.
Just like the Grote Waterpoort, the Kleine Waterpoort is a denomination in the seawall. To protect Delfzijl from high water, the Kleine Waterpoort can be closed with a manually operated revolving door. As a gateway to the fortified city of the port, the gate was closed for the last time during the siege of Delfzijl (1813-1814).
