Nispen is an old village. In 1157 it is already mentioned under the name Nisipa. It is mentioned in a charter that confirmed a donation of various goods from Arnulfus de Brabander to the abbey of Tongerlo. The place was the seat of the parish of Nispen, which was spread over the towns of Kalmthout, Essen, Nieuwmoer, Achterbroek, Wildert, Nispen, Roosendaal and Zegge.
The place name Nispen is probably derived from the meaning water through a low-lying land or land sticking into the water. However, it is also said that it is derived from the meaning of the healing water or the healing water.
Every last Sunday of August there is the annual village brasserie in Nispen. In the village is the Mill of Aerden, a belt mill with a unique self-balancing system. This mill has no sails, but valves on the sails.
