The town hall in 's-Hertogenbosch was architected by Jan Derkennis, who was also involved in the construction of St. John's Cathedral. The building dates from the second half of the 14th century. In 1372 the oldest bell was hung. In 1463, part of the town hall burned down for a large part, after which it had to be rebuilt. This renovation was completed in 1533.
After the Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch in 1629, the pro-Spanish city was occupied by troops of the Protestant Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. The town hall was then given a new appearance that was to radiate the power of the province of Holland, the most important force within the Republic.
