Research in Etosha National Park by biologist Caitlin O'Connell showed that there was something strange about elephants' senses. She noticed that when an elephant noticed something in the distance, the elephant tilted its paw and touched the ground with the nails of the paw. She became convinced that the elephant was trying to pick up vibrations through the ground and could "hear" with its paw nails whether a herd of elephants was approaching.
