The church was built in 1531 together with the adjacent Benedictine monastery Badia Nuova , demolished in 1699 and rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century.
It is discreet on the outside , but on the inside it is balanced and spatially subdued. There is a beautiful painting by Pietro Novelli depicting Saint Benedict of Norcia dispensing the rule. There are eight stucco statues made in 1724 by Giacomo Serpotta, which are among the artist's most important masterpieces and approach Bernini's works in terms of expressive power. The images that adorn the walls are: Peace, Humanity, Strength, Purity, Our Lady of Sorrows, Mary Magdalene, Saint Peter and Saint Paul
