The Saronic Islands, often referred to as the Argo-Saronic Islands, are a group of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. They are located in the Saronic Gulf, relatively close to the capital Athens, and to places in the Peloponnese such as Corinth and Nafplio. Many people living in Athens visit one of these islands on weekends, as they can be reached quickly from the port of Pireus. The islands are a popular destination for tourists coming from the Greek mainland (Athens or the Peloponnese). Salamis is less popular than, for example, Aegina, because of the industrial character of the island.
