The plain of Messinia is a graben system: a geological block which went down relative to the two blocks which went up (horsts). On the East side: the Taygetos Mountain Range, West the Kyparissia Mountains. This graben was filled up with river and sea deposits (mainly clay) forming the vertile plain of Messinia. It''s also here that the river Nedon found its way between the mountain ranges to the Gulf of Messinia.
