The history of the rebellion against the British and the Troubles are central themes in Irish filmography. Steve McQueen made an impressive testimony to the hunger strikes in the Maze prison in 1981 with his first feature film Hunger (2008). The film marked the breakthrough of German-Irish actor Michael Fassbender, who plays the role of Bobby Sands.
