At the very tip of Ireland, in the Western Isles, live those on the margins. Those whom John M. Synge visited at the dawn of the 20th century. He listened to their language, observed their work and captured the lifestyles of wandering tinkers and vagabonds.
So, there, Sarah Casey, a travelling girl, wanted to marry her companion, Michael Byrne, a tinker by trade. But with a companion who drags his feet, a boorish, thieving, anti-clerical "mother-in-law" and a stingy, insulting parish priest, maybe they won't get married, and maybe it won't be so bad after all, because in the end, this is Freedom with a capital L.
Françoise Morvan, publisher, translator, essayist and playwright, has put her dual Franco-Breton culture at the service of a language created by Synge. The result is a language that is imaginative and strange, but also full of poetry? and pitfalls to avoid, all of which are little pleasures for the actors to say and play.
