A wine-growing commune on the Route du Vin, at an altitude of 220m, Mittelwihr currently has 867 inhabitants. 10km from Colmar and 3 from Riquewihr, at the gateway to the town and at the foot of the mountain. Rich history and culture, between Germanic princes and the Cistercian order. Rare but exceptional remains: the Bouxhof Farm, a former abbey; the imposing arches of the former church, which included a simultaneum.
90% of the village was destroyed in December 1944 during the fighting in the Poche de Colmar, and is now a major Alsatian vineyard, with a large number of owner-growers producing fine, renowned wines. The town benefits from a microclimate that has earned it the nickname 'The South of Alsace': Grand Crus and almond trees flourish here. Hence the name 'Mandelberg', Colline des Amandiers. The 'Grand Cru Mandelberg' appellation is the pride of the village.
On the heights of the village, you can enjoy peaceful walks with remarkable panoramic views over the Rhine plain and the hills of the sub-Svosgian region: the 'Perles du Vignoble' Grand Cru trail. A wide range of shops: groceries, newspapers, souvenirs and crockery. A few craftsmen. Cellars open all year round. A hotel, bed & breakfasts, self-catering cottages, a restaurant, an auberge-restaurant and a bar. A welcome center for study and vacation groups. Not forgetting the fountain with its winged horse head, whose spring water never runs dry. Everything to make an ideal holiday resort.
