Description by the author

The intention is to visit both the Alhambra and the city of Granada in one comprehensive visit. The Alhambra is partly free to visit, partly paid and for the Palacios Nazaries even a visiting hour must be reserved.

For this walk we park at the paying car park of the Alhambra . It must be decided to first visit the Alhambra and then descend to the city or vice versa. It can be assumed that it can be quieter in the late afternoon in the Alhambra , but this brings the stress of having to be back at a certain hour for the entrance to the Palacios Nazaries...

Do not underestimate the difficulty: many stairs and a long distance for a city walk ...

This city walk is part of a series of city walks and tours described in Day trips in central Andalusia: Cádiz - Jerez-de-la-frontera - Pueblos-Blancos - Córdoba - Granada

The Alhambra and the Generalife:

Since perfect audio guides can be obtained, we will not go into detail here.

You will first visit the Generalife, then the Palacio de Carlos V , the Alcazaba and the Palacios Nazieries. Since you have to specify a specific departure time for the latter, the order may differ slightly.

The Generalif e is best known for its beautiful gardens. The Palacio de Carlos V has a large circular courtyard with Doric columns on the lower floor and Ionic columns on the upper. The Alcazaba is an impressive building with an imposing Torre de la Vela with an impressive view of the surroundings and a striking large clock.

The Palacios Nazieries are impressive in terms of walls, vaults and floor. Outside there are the remains of the Palacio de Yusuf III and the Jardines del paraiso.

After the visit to the Alhambra, we descend a lot of stairs to the Plaza de Santo Domingo with its church of the same name. Soon we will come back here to return to the parking lot.

City visit Granada:

We pass iglesia de San Matías and the Corral del Carbón , the old grain exchange with a beautiful entrance gate and past the Iglesia Parroquial del Sagrario and some town squares up to the Catedral de Granada.

You now climb again via a few churches and monasteries and the Plaza San Miguel and the Convento de Santa Isabel Real until you reach the Plaza San Nicolás. The climb was worth it because the view here is phenomenal! The mirador offers an astonishing view of the Alhambra because we are here on the other side of the valley of the Darro.

Here are some churches and also the Mezquita Mayor de Granada. We now descend steeply until we reach the bottom of the Iglesia de San Pedro y San Pablo and follow the valley of the Darro for a while to a beautiful park with the Fuente del Paseo de los Tristes.

We return along the Darro and pass some stately homes and the ruins of the Puente del Cadi on the Plaza de Santa Ana with the imposing Real Chancillería. The square transitions seamlessly in the Plaza Nueva de Granada with its fountain.

Along the Plaza Isabel La Católica with the Monumento as Capitulaciones that was erected on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by the Spaniard Columbus.

We return to the Plaza de Santo Domingo past the Convento de San José de Carmelitas Descalzasen and take the many steps to the parking lot at the top of the Alhambra.

Be sure to consult the information about the sights once you are on site . They explain what you will see!
