The monument to the Marquis of Comillas is in Albereda Apodaca , an open space in the walls overlooking the Bay of Cadiz.
Inaugurated in 1922, it is the work of Catalan sculptor Antonio Parera.
At its base are two ship masks, stern and bow, and above them the figures of a lion and a condor, symbols of Europe and America. There is also a Matron with a Child, a symbol of Spain's maternal union with the Americas, and the statue of the Honored, Don Claudio López, Marquis of Comillas, a shipowner closely linked to the city's maritime life.
On the tall central column, adorned with shields and medallions, is the bronze statue of the genius of Christianity.
A curiosity: this monument has a crypt that, years after its dedication, housed the first underground Hispanic American library .
