"The site, excavated only partially, can be divided into four parts, of successive occupations, located around a natural harbor: the first Greek foundation, located on a peninsula (today Sant Martí d'Empúries) called by archaeologists Palaiapolis (old city), the Greek city on the mainland, on the seashore, called Neapolis (new city), the Roman city, located west of the Neapolis, and remains of an Iberian settlement of the Indigetas until today not yet located archaeologically.
The city was walled and the walls were remade at various times. In the center of the Neapolis is the square or agora. Only one access gate to the city is preserved, to the south, flanked by two square towers. The streets were irregular and adapted to the natural terrain. Next to the square there was a Estoa (building for mercantile transactions). The city had several temples that are supposed to have been dedicated to Zeus-Serapis and Asclepius (Aesculapius).
The Roman city was surrounded by a concrete wall of lime formwork on two rows of gigantic stones. It had a large arcaded forum square, with several temples and shops, and large public baths. Outside the wall there was an amphitheater and a gymnasium or palestra. To the south of the Neapolis they have found various remains of industrial uses and, especially, related to metallurgical works.
Several necropolises are known around the city." http://www.mac.cat/alt/prepact/cat/emp/historia.html
