Description by the author

This tour leads from Tiefenellern to Strullendorf straight through Franconian beer culture - past (originally) seven breweries. Five of them are still open and serve their respective liquid trademarks. The landscape is at least as fine as the beer culture along the way. Much of the route runs parallel to the 13-Brauereien-Weg from Memmelsdorf to Strullendorf and can be easily reached using the Fränkische Toskana-Express leisure line. Practical: The 13-Brauereien-Weg is signposted in both directions - so it can also be walked from Strullendorf to Tiefenellern and on to Memmelsdorf. Delicious beer, the finest views, vast landscapes. What more could you want?

For real beer enjoyment and a harmonious get-together, we ask you to observe the following rules on the 13-Brauereien-Weg:

  • Bachelor parties, masked groups as well as drunk and loud people are not served!
  • Please enjoy alcohol responsibly and in moderation.
  • Do not disturb or bother other guests with your behavior.
  • Loud music along the route is undesirable and is prohibited in all pubs.
  • Additional alcohol - especially high-proof alcohol - is not welcome!
  • Empty beer bottles should be handed in at the nearest brewery or in the collection boxes.
  • Preserve the hiking trail for future guests and do not take any signs or signposts with you!
  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol, but use a bus or cab instead.

With this in mind, we hope you enjoy hiking the 13 Breweries Trail!

Description of the route:

In Bamberg, our bus 970 starts diagonally left from the station via the station forecourt in Ludwigstraße either at the station/atrium stop or at the station/post office stop opposite. Get off at Tiefenellern. If you want to shorten the tour by approx. 2 km, you can also get off in Lohndorf.

From the bus stop in Tiefenellern, just a short distance back, we keep left past the chapel on the main road. After 50 meters, we reach the first brewery with its large beer garden.

Back at the bus stop, we continue along "An der Ecke" on the 13-Brauereien-Weg towards Lohndorf. Shortly before Lohndorf, we come across "Der Sieger", a sculpture by Harald Müller from Berlin, an ideal selfie spot at the start of the tour!

Only a few more meters and we reach Lohndorf. In Lohndorf, we follow the main road to the Reh brewery (bottle sales) and then to the Hölzlein brewery.

Continue along the main road, just outside the village follow the 13-Brauereien-Weg sign to the left. Follow this until shortly before Melkendorf. On the next passage, we pass several sculptures on the art and contemplation trail, which was created by local artist Robert Hofmann. Along the mountainside, you can always enjoy a beautiful view of the "Franconian Tuscany". Through the forest, we come to a signpost and the markings at the second T-junction at the top. This leads us left up the path to the singers' memorial.

Behind the memorial, we descend the hill to Melkendorf (Leitersgraben). In the village, we continue straight downhill for a short distance, then turn right along Otterbachstraße to the former Winkler brewery, which is now open as the Brandholz brewery on a few dates a year.

Following Otterbachstraße, we come to the 13-Brauereien-Weg trail again, which we continue on the left in the direction of Strullendorf (Geisbergstraße). After approx. 900 m through the forest, we come to a junction. On the left, we see a sign for the Wendelinus oak.

For a detour to the oak, of which only part of the trunk remains today, we turn right briefly and after approx. 20 m turn left into the forest at the information board. The oak is said to have been over 1000 years old and may have served as a pagan sacrificial site. After the oak tree, turn left and take the small detour to get back to the main path, which you follow (including the cycle path signs) to Geisfeld.

In the village on Melkendorfer Straße downhill, the signposts at house number 1 guide you to the left into "Unterer Geisberg". Before the transformer house, turn right across a parking lot to the Krug brewery. Unfortunately, the restaurant at the Krug brewery is currently closed, but beer is sold on certain days. Alternatively, you can stop off at Landgasthof Büttel on Litzendorfer Straße, just a few meters away.

Or you can follow Litzendorfer Straße in the direction of Bamberg for a few meters and pass the Griess brewery. From the Krug brewery, turn left into Magdalenenstraße, walk past the church before turning right into "Pfarrgäßla". We then turn right along the cemetery walls and then left into "Am Steinich". Follow this road to the beautifully situated Griess-Keller.

We head southwest via "Zum Steinich" to Roßdorf a.F. Before the first houses, we turn left behind the barrier onto the path to the Roßdorfer Felsenkeller brewery Sauer. If the cellar is closed due to bad weather, we have to go a little further, past the cellar and straight on through the little street into the village. Turn right at the main road - after the fountain, you will come to the Sauer Brewery inn on the left.

From the Felsenkeller, follow the road to the left before the alley (cycle symbol). First turn left at the road, then right after the Geisfeld stream. Follow the paved path along the valley until you reach a T-junction. Passing the small pond on the right, we leave the Almrauschhütte on the right - depending on whether we are thirsty or hungry - and reach the road from Strullendorf to Amlingstadt.

After a short time, we reach a crossroads on the other side of the road. This branches off to the left and we follow it to the first houses in Amlingstadt. Turn right before this - past the Grenzmühle mill - and continue straight on into the forest. We can hear the nearby highway, which we cross under after a short while via the Ziegenbach bridge. After a left-hand bend, the route then climbs only briefly alongside the crash barriers. The first unmarked turn-off to the right leads us along the slope in the forest. At the end of the descent, the Schwanenkeller in Strullendorf is already waiting for us. Depending on how much time we have or how thirsty we are, we can stop here for a last rest.

From here, it is about 20 minutes to the train station. Continuing straight downhill, only initially on cobblestones (Am Kairoth), we soon come to Lindenallee, which we follow straight ahead to Laurentiuskirche.

First turn right into Bamberger Straße, then left again into Bahnhofstraße, which takes us to the train station in Strullendorf. From here, the S-Bahn takes us back in the direction of Bamberg or Nuremberg.
