Description by the author

A scenic and eventful hike on the trail of mining on the Dachsberg with lots of information on mining and botanical highlights

The trail is signposted with the premium trail hiking signs and the hammer & mallet mining symbol. In sections, it runs parallel to the nature trail "Around the Horbach Moor".It leads past medieval mine workings and potholes, sites of former silver ore mining along the Ruprechtgangzug. Numerous information boards explain medieval mining and the interesting fauna. In addition to discovering the mining industry, you can enjoy a diverse landscape and wonderful views, with panoramic views of the Alps in Horbach.

You will see many highlights between Urberg and Wittenschwand.
The Kreuzfelsen with its refuge and benches offers a wonderful view of Wittenschwand and, with a bit of luck, the Alps.

At the Friedrich-August-Grube, the mining past of the municipality of Dachsberg becomes present, and at the same time this is one of the nature reserves along the way. The nature discovery area with its sound play equipment will delight children.

In Urberg, you can visit the mineral museum on Thursdays and Sundays from 2 pm to 4 pm. You can also stop off at the Café zum Alten Engel from Thursday to Sunday.

The new signage was funded by the Southern Black Forest LEADER Action Group!

Interesting facts about the places along the way:

The hamlets belonging to Urberg originated from clearing settlements that were established under the influence of the monastery of St. Blasien. The "Urberge" were first mentioned in 1237. Mining for silver and lead can be traced back to 1328 in Urberg and was carried out until 1835. Fluorite and barite were mined in the "Gottesehre" mine in Oberbildstein until 1987. Today, the "Mineral Museum Gottesehre" in Inner-Urberg, inaugurated in 2002, and the mining trail near Rüttewies are reminders of the town's rich mining history.

Wittenschwand is the main village in the municipality of Dachsberg. The individual parts of the village originated from clearing settlements that were created under the influence of the St. Blasien monastery. Wittenschwand is mentioned for the first time in 1266.
Mining was already flourishing between Wittenschwand and Urberg around 1100.

The Friedrich-August-Grube has been designated a nature reserve since 2005. Nickel ore and magnetic gravel were mined in the mine. The mine was named after Friedrich August Walchner, who first recognized the nickel content of the ore in 1847.
The area is part of the "Oberer Hotzenwald" fauna-flora habitat. It is a habitat for highly specialized and rare lichen communities on sites rich in heavy metals. There is also rock vegetation rich in rare plant species, especially on the silicate rocks with their crevice vegetation.
A species- and structure-rich mosaic of reedbeds, large sedge meadows, small sedge meadows, intermediate moorland and nutrient-poor grassland can be found at the monastery pond.
The two bat species Greater mouse-eared bat and Bechstein's bat are at home here.
