The Oste River originates in a low moor area near Torstedt and flows through the district of Rotenburg (Wümme) before joining the Lower Elbe near Neuhaus after about 150 km. The water level of the Oste becomes tide-dependent from the barrage in Bremervörde. With long stretches remaining unstraightened and predominantly natural riverbanks, the Oste River holds a special ecological significance due to its diverse flora and fauna. Within the Oste floodplain, protected habitats such as riparian forests, tall herbaceous vegetation, reed beds, wet meadows, and isolated floodplain forests can be found. The Oste serves as a breeding, nursery, and feeding ground for endangered species such as the kingfisher, the grey wagtail, various dragonfly species, and many small fish species. The otter is also becoming more common in this area. Observant visitors may spot footprints, feeding remains, or droppings under bridges, indicating the presence of otters. The river is abundant in fish and is considered the first German river with a self-replenishing salmon population.Nature-friendly paddlingDue to the large fish population and unique beauty, the Oste River is not only attractive to anglers and water sports enthusiasts but also to hikers and walkers. Through conservation efforts, the Oste now provides a home to numerous rare plant and animal species. Life along and within the river may not always be apparent at first glance, but these are highly productive and sensitive ecosystems. Humans are mere guests here and should act accordingly. Please follow the Golden Rules in planning and carrying out your trip to ensure that the Oste remains a valuable habitat in the future. Violations can result in fines.Navigability/RulesNavigation on the Oste is only possible when the water level permits. According to the regulation of the district of Rotenburg (Wümme) that came into effect on June 16, 2015, the reference level of the NLWKN in Rockstedt is decisive for water sports.Boat registration before departureBefore setting off with your own boat, you must register your boat once with the district of Rotenburg (Wümme).
