Description

The hike starts in Balgstädt at the former water castle in the center of the city.

Through a beautiful meadow, you climb up into a deciduous forest. At the top of the forest edge - with a wide view into the valley of the Unstrut and on Neuenburg Castle - you feel as if you are in an amphitheater.
A few steps further, no less spectacular, the view into the valley towards Nißmitz. The sky a fairytale blue and flown over by kites, this is how the Rödel plateau presents itself with its diverse flora. Konik horses have been settled to maintain the dry grasslands and prevent overgrowth.
The small wild horses are the attraction on the Rödel. Curiously, they inspect everything and, long accustomed to hikers, are very trusting.

In the past, limestone was extracted in numerous quarries on the Rödel. Some of these old quarries are still open and visible, while others have been reclaimed by nature.

On the viewing platform, you can learn about the flora and fauna of the Rödel, rest, and enjoy the views. A forest path leads you back to Balgstädt.
