From the Elsterwerda town hall, a 7.5 km hiking route leads past the town church of St. Catharina, the Electoral Saxon Post Office Column from 1738 and the Baroque Elster Castle, among other things. Once a castle that was rebuilt into a palace complex in the 17th century by order of King August the Strong, the Elster Castle Gymnasium is now located in this listed palace. It is one of the most beautiful schools in Germany.
Outside the city it wanders idyllically near the Black Elster, a tributary of the Elbe about 180 km long.
