Short description

From Lerbach past the Söse reservoir, up the hill to the Acker into the Harz National Park. The Hanskühnenburg invites you to take a break before descending to Sieber.

Description

In Lerbach, now a district of Osterode, the 2nd stage of the BaudenSteig begins. Thanks to the numerous mining sites, Lerbach was often referred to as a mountain village in the past, even though it is located in the valley. The path leads to the idyllic Söse reservoir. Today, the Söse reservoir supplies the region around Göttingen and the area around Hannover with drinking water. Shortly after the reservoir, the path ascends. At the height, on natural paths, hiking is excellent. Here in the area Auf dem Acker, already in the Harz National Park, there is a beautiful high moor landscape. The mountain ridge consists of Acker-Bruchberg-Quartzite. This is a very hard rock, which is why the Acker resisted weathering much better than the surroundings and rises to over 800 meters above sea level, guaranteeing magnificent views. The Hanskühnenburg rock announces the nearby lodge. From the tower, you can enjoy a panoramic view in good weather. Time for a leisurely stop. By the way, one of the most prominent hikers at the Hanskühnenburg rock was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, although there was no rustic lodge at that time. The destination is near: from here, the BaudenSteig leads downhill to Sieber.

Directions

Start in Lerbach (S) at Hotel Sauerbrey. Follow shortly uphill along the main road, then right into Mühlental towards the open-air museum (1) (on the left). Continue straight uphill on a meadow path. In the forest, turn right, passing a sheep pen, then left. Now hike uphill together with the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg for a while. Hike on a wide forest path to Königsecke (viewpoint). Pass the Rote Sohle to Eselsplatz (2) (rest area and hut). Now downhill towards Söse reservoir on a path. Shortly follow B498 to the right towards the parking lot at the dam. Leisurely stroll over the dam - with a wonderful view of the reservoir (3). Then turn right, past the secondary dam. Turn left on a path to a forest road. Here, follow Apenketal to the left for about 300 m, then turn right. Continue uphill on a forest path to Schindelkopf hut (4) (fireplace/view). Continue to the Stern intersection. Here, follow Nassen Weg to the right - quite literally. Good footwear is required. Pass numerous blueberry bushes uphill over rocks and stones. At the border to the Harz National Park, turn left, Ackerfastweg. Further through the high moor region (5) with fabulous views (view of the Harz foothills: Bocksberg opposite and below the pre-dam of the Söse reservoir). Soon you reach Hanskühnenburg (6) (refreshments). Its worth taking a long break here, be sure to climb the tower before (fantastic panorama). Follow the asphalt road downhill to the right, past a spring, to a crossroads (additional marking green dot). At Km 13.5 (7), leave the asphalt road, follow the gravel road to the left. The wide path leads through tall conifers. Keep slightly left at the next intersection. Follow the Andreaweg downhill through beech forest in wide curves. Stay on the wide path above Sieber, then turn left downhill into the village towards the main street (8). To the swimming pool, town center, or for overnight? You decide. The large and freely accessible amusement park with adventure playground and nearly 50m long giant slide offers families with children a welcome change and an ideal destination.
