The hike takes us through the historic town of Hirsau with its imposing St. Peter and Paul monastery complex and along narrow paths through the adventurous Wolfsschlucht gorge and dreamy Fuchsklinge.
Hirsau was at times one of the most important monasteries in Germany.
At the time of its construction in the late 11th century, the three-aisled basilica of St. Peter and Paul was one of the largest Romanesque churches in southwest Germany. Hermann Hesse hiked a lot in and around Calw-Hirsau. It is not known for sure whether he wandered through the Wolf Gorge, but it certainly was and is an experience. The Wolfsschlucht can really be described as an insider tip. In contrast to the Monbach Valley further down the Nagold, the Wolf Gorge is hardly known.
It is wild, the walk is almost alpine. The gorge is geologically young and constantly changing. The route through the Fuchsklinge gorge to the restaurant of the same name is wildly romantic but leisurely. Today's inn is attached to the former railroad keeper's cottage. The "Fuchsklinge" stop on the "Hirsau - Weil der Stadt" railroad line was located here.
