The comprehensive school with upper secondary level "Bruno H. Bürgel", founded in 1948, is located in the city of Rathenow in the district of Havelland. It is a recognized UNESCO project school. The Bürgelschule, awarded as the most athletic school in Brandenburg in the school year 2010/11, is also a partner school of the football club Hertha BSC and the basketball club Alba Berlin.
The Bürgelschule in Rathenow was named after the writer and science journalist Bruno H. Bürgel. As an amateur astronomer and scientist, Bruno H. Bürgel gave lectures for students and was also a guest in Rathenow. Due to the connection of the city and the optics trade, as well as the development of telescopes for astronomical research, the school is very closely associated with Bürgel and his works. The establishment of the Bruno H. Bürgel School Rathenow was thus made in honor of his merits in science and the use of optical devices in research. In 1948, the school was founded in the Goethestraße 86, surrounded by rubble. Already in 1952, the move to Jahnstraße 33 took place, also because the facilities in Goethestraße were insufficient. In 1960, the Bruno H. Bürgel School was merged with the then Friedrich Engels School. At that time, 41 teachers taught around 1000 students in 33 classes. Only four years later, the schools were separated again and classes continued with 20 each. The last move took place in 1972. Since then, the school has been located in a new building in the urban area of Rathenow-East. This location was partially modernized in 2000 and adjusted in sections to meet the needs of a comprehensive school and a modern school environment in the following years. After the reunification in 1990, the Bruno H. Bürgel School continued to exist as a comprehensive school. The instruction from grade 7 was expanded to include an upper secondary level as part of the educational reform. The support association "Bruno H. Bürgel e.V." started its work in April 1992 with about 180 members. In the following years, the school restructured itself under a sports profile and focused on promoting athletic children while simultaneously securing the academic paths of these talents. Furthermore, in 1995, the school was designated as a UNESCO project school and continues to participate in various projects to this day. Since the school year 2002/03, the Bürgelschule has been a full-day school in a fully integrated form. To this day, the school's work is dedicated to the athletic promotion of its students and cultural projects within the framework of the UNESCO initiative.
