Remembrance plate WWII - Huy

On December 31, 1943, the resistance staged a coup in Huy prison. They freed, among other things, seven death row inmates from the resistance who would be executed by the Germans the next day.

It was at dawn on December 31 that a commando of about 20 men led by Hutois André Manne went into action. Thanks to the complicity of a Belgian guard, they managed to take over the prison within minutes.

Micheline Thonet had received a message from her mother the day before, thanks to the complicity of a German guard: "My niece will give birth on the morning of the 31st". She understood that something was going to happen and before dawn she was already dressed and ready to go. The German guard looks through the peephole and asks why she is already dressed. By the time the door was open the commando was already inside.
