In 1269 Damme received the count's permission to drain the water from the castle pond of Male.
This was necessary because of the brackish groundwater due to the presence of seawater in the city. A lead pipe carried the drinking water from the ponds of the castle from Male to Damme over a distance of 4 km . The various city fountains and pumps were connected to the pipe. One of those fountains is located opposite the Sint-Janshospitaal and is known as "'t Zeugsken".
In the 19th century the fountain was replaced by this pump.
