Already in 1133 there is mention of a parish Odegem, connected with the monastery of Sint-Trudo.
In 1875 , Pastor Filip Pollet bought the plot of land on Steenbrugge. He had a rectory, a church, a monastery and a school built there, all in neo-Gothic style. In 1896 the monastery is elevated to a Benedictine abbey. During the First World War , the abbey was heavily damaged and during the Second World War, the church tower was destroyed.
The monastery is abandoned at the beginning of the 21st century. A new monastery house is being built in the former vegetable garden for the remaining monks who will move there in 2008. The former abbey buildings are leased to the non-profit organization Catholic Education of the diocese of Bruges.
Steenbrugge Abbey is mainly known for its extensive library and the many publications it publishes, the most famous of which is the 'Corpus Christianorum', which is still ongoing.
Only the neo - Gothic abbey church can be visited . Every Sunday at 10 a.m. the male choir performs Gregorian chants here.
In the cemetery is a grave monument for Modest van Assche (1965).
