On this anonymous painting from 1564: the main street of Hoogstraten with the beautiful name 'De Vrijheid' (The Freedom). The second house at the right side of the St. Catharina-church (in the middle) is the historic inn 'De Swaen'. It doesn't exist anymore. Probably it was the spot where Queen Christina of Sweden the 5th of August 1654 incised her name on a glass. The source, rev. Gerardus van Herdegom, wrote in 1654 in the cronicle of neigbouring village Baarle, that she incised her name in the inn 'De Drij Swaenen'. An inn with that name can't be found in the archives of Hoogstraten. 'De drij Swaenen' may be a variant or corruption of 'De Swaen'.
