The Congregation of Saint-Maur, also called the Maurists or Maurines , was a congregation of Benedictine monks founded in 1621.
Very often the intellectual spirit of the Saint-Maur Congregation is emphasized. This congregation was of great importance for intellectual life in the 17th and 18th centuries and produced a number of great scholars . Not all Moors were brilliant scholars, of course monks were also needed to deal with everyday matters.
The Maurists left an impressive testament to their intellectual work. The Order produced 220 authors and more than 700 works, not counting what was in preparation when the Order was abolished during the French Revolution.
