Vresse already had a church in 1235. Until the Revolution, the parish was overseen by the Abbey of Saint-Hubert. The current church has a nave from 1768 and a tower from 1837. The village has become a meeting place for artists, which explains the number of artists who worked on the cross of the chapel.
Lambertus van Maastricht, also Lambertus van Luik, Lambert, Landebertus or Lambrecht is a Roman Catholic saint and the patron saint of textile workers. His name day is September 17 and his attribute is a lance. Little is known with certainty about the life of Lambertus. Legends, on the other hand, abound. He is said to have been born in 638 in Wintershoven. He was baptized by Bishop Remaclus and was able to speak after only three months. At the age of thirty he became bishop of Maastricht. Lambertus was removed from office and spent the years 674-681 in exile in the Celtic Christian Abbey of Stavelot, founded by Remaclus in 648. In 6871 Lambertus was able to hold office again and he returned to his diocese. He preached the gospel to the pagans in the Kempen and the lower reaches of the Maas, in present-day North Brabant and North Limburg. In this area, therefore, quite a few churches are dedicated to him.
Lambertus' family had Dodo, a steward of Pepin of Herstal and presumably the brother of Pepin of Herstal's second wife Alpaida, murdered. Dodo's relatives, whose power base was near Liège, retaliated by, in turn, killing Lambertus at his estate. Lambertus' cousins Petrus and Andolet were also murdered. The official Roman Catholic version sees Lambertus as a martyr to the faith for his defense of marital fidelity, by denouncing the union between Pepin with Alpaida, Dodo's brother and Charles Martel's mother.
