If you look closely, you will see that the grassland goes up a little bit just next to the river Mark. We are talking about less than 20 centimeters here, but you can see and feel it when you step on it. This is an example of a bank wall. When the river bursts its banks, it first deposits the coarse material (sand and loam) close to the river. The smaller particles (clay) are deposited after the water settles in the alluvial soils. In the case of large riverbanks, embankments are metres wide and even only metres high. But here you have to try a little harder to recognize the embankment.
