Flood meadows
The grasslands you see in the background are former flood meadows. When there were no dikes, these wet grasslands flooded regularly. Nutrients and minerals dissolved in the water were deposited on the soil: the meadows were fertilized in a natural way.
Because manure was very scarce in the Kempen, these meadows were of great importance to the farmers. Since they mowed these grasslands and allowed them to graze, a very open landscape was created with plants such as marsh violet, speedwell, reed grass, cuckoo flower and typical birds such as bluethroat and water rail.
During the wet winter months, ducks and the rare snipe use this area as a wintering place.
