Swamp restoration

In recent years, Limburgs Landschap vzw has purchased large parts of 't Hasselterbroek and the Stamprooierbroek. What Limburgs Landschap vzw is doing now with the management is undoing the drainage function. Dewatering is one of the main concerns of agriculture in this region. Conservation does exactly the opposite. The original, peaty vegetation benefits from this. And when you say peat, you say valuable nature. A lot of water is so special as a living environment that it almost automatically becomes synonymous with a rich and special nature.
In addition, ponds have been created and ponds have been restored. It is not only about visible surface water, but also, for example in the western part of 't Hasselterbroek, about wet meadows in which a number of typical 'meadow bird species' feel very comfortable. This not only creates an excellent home for the lapwing, the black-tailed godwit and the curlew, but also for reed birds such as the bittern and bearded male. And who knows, maybe the marsh harrier – lover of reed beds par excellence – will soon return?
