Klein-Gelmen was originally part of the parish of Gelinden. The church was a quarta-cappella of that of Gelinden. Archival sources already mention a chapel in the year 1000, dedicated to Our Lady and Saint Eligius. Like the mother church, the chapel belonged to the Saint Maternus chapter of Liège. One third of the tithes belonged to the chapter of Saint Maternus and two thirds to the provost of the cathedral of Saint Lambert in Liège. In 1560 the construction or remodeling of a tower is mentioned.
