Description

Bunker built of reinforced concrete blocks belonging to the German Hollandstellung. The line was erected in the period 1916-18 by the German army because it feared an Allied attack via the neutral Netherlands. The Stellung runs from Knokke to Beveren and joins the also German Stellung Antwerp at Vrasene, built in the same period. The bunkers at Evergem must be seen in the light of the protection of the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal. At Eeklo (Strobrugge) the line split into an outpost line and a main line. The line was used only to a very limited extent and locally in a combat situation.
