At the end of the war, American troops played an important role in the final offensive. It is the smallest American cemetery on the European mainland and also the only American First World War cemetery in Belgium. It contains some 370 American burials from the Great War. In 1927 Charles Lindbergh flew over the cemetery and dropped poppies in honour of his fallen countrymen.
