Ninove

The picture that Boon paints of the inhabitants of Ninove in Het Geuzenboek could hardly be clearer: 'the stubborn Ninovites' refused to pay for the mercenary army of the governors and sought to join the rebellious Ghent. When the advancing Geuzen were about to conquer Ninove in 1580, according to Boon's Geuzenboek, a captain of the vigilante received money from two noblemen to open the city gate for the Geuzen. This way they could enter unhindered and without bloodshed. Boon tells how the gate opened in the morning twilight, after which the Geuzenruiterij stormed into the city. Ninove had been conquered. Two years later, in April 1582, the Geuzen also took Aalst. The lively centre at the foot of the Church of our Lady of the Assumption, the former church of the Norbertine Abbey, still has some historic buildings and monuments that are definitely worth a visit. In the archaeological garden next to the church you can still see the foundations of part of the once impressive building complex. Also worth it: the striking Old Town Hall with the carillon tower that resounds a Ninoof folk melody over the city every quarter of an hour.
