Petrus Verhasselt, abbot of Affligem, already mentioned in 1604 a former farm/brewery in Kobbegem. It was not until 1686 that Joris Van Der Hasselt was mentioned as the first brewer. Through marriages and inheritances, the brewery came into the hands of Jean-Baptist De Keersmaeker in 1869. The farm remained in operation until the Second World War, after which brewing became the main activity. In the 1960s, the brewery produced more than 60% lager, compared to 30% top-fermented beer and only 10% lambic. The turnaround in favor of lambic came after the pilsner market gradually came into the hands of large breweries. In 1970, the Mort Subite, a well-known Brussels café and geuze blendery, was taken over from the Vossen brothers. From then on, the beers no longer bore the name Den Hert but Mort Subite. De Keersmaeker slowly grew into a fixed value in the specific beer segment of gueuze and fruit beer. In 1972 the first commercial collaboration with the Maes family followed. In 1989, the Eylenbosch brewery was taken over from Schepdaal. In the same year, Paul De Keersmaeker, André's brother, withdrew from the business and sold his shares to Theo Maes. For example, 50% of the shares came into the hands of the then Maes brewery. Since October 2000, the Alken-Maes group has held 100% of the shares. Alken-Maes, in turn, is the Belgian arm of the British group "Scottish & Newcastle". Mort Subite produces gueuze, kriek, oude geuze, faro and fruit beers such as raspberry, peach and cassis.
