Asse was, together with Elewijt, Binche and Blicquy, one of the four main towns of the Nervians. The Nervians were a Belgian tribe that lived in northern France and southern Belgium, between the Scheldt and Sambre, at the time of the conquest by Julius Caesar. The tribe controlled an important sector of the great trade route from Cologne to Amiens (the Chaussée Brunehaut).
